The Origin: Miyagikyo is the second distillery established by Nikka’s legendary founder, Masataka Taketsuru. Built in 1969, the site is completely enclosed by mountains and nestled at the junction of the Shin and Hirose rivers. This specific valley was chosen for its pure, freshwater streams and crisp, high-humidity mountain air, creating the perfect environmental conditions for gentle spirit maturation.

The Character: In contrast to the heavy, coal-fired style of its sister distillery (Yoichi), Miyagikyo utilizes steam-heated pot stills. This method produces a noticeably soft, mild, and elegantly fruity malt profile that consistently rivals the finest distilleries in Scotland.

Tasting Notes:

• Color: Bright gold with a pale straw hue.

• Nose: Pristine and fresh. Mouthwatering barley notes combine with juicy, estery aromas—notably banana confectionery—resting over a discreet, sweet smoky base.

• Palate: Beautifully soft and warming. The fresh fruit and grain notes repeat gracefully on the tongue, joined by a more substantial presence of warming spice and subtle wood smoke.

• Finish: Exceptionally balanced and dry. A long aftertaste of toasted cereals, spice, and smooth lanolin yields a clean, refreshing, peppermint-like finale.
